In Episode 12 of The Homeland, host Dean Cain sits down with two guests who have operated at the center of American national security policy: Florida Senator Rick Scott and former Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the Department of Homeland Security, Tricia McLaughlin.
The result is one of the most information-dense episodes the show has produced, covering election security, Western Hemisphere liberation, congressional accountability, birthright citizenship, the pharmaceutical supply chain, and a northern border threat that most Americans have never been told about.
Senator Rick Scott: Do Your Chores Before Recess
Senator Scott joined the show directly from committee, where the Senate had just processed over 300 nominations for positions in the armed services and the Department of War. His frustration with congressional scheduling was immediate and personal.
The Senate and House will not be in joint session again until well into the fall, despite major legislation remaining unfinished. The Save America Act has not passed. Government funding is not secured. A sanctions bill against Russia is pending. Yet recess is treated as immovable.
The Mom Theory
Scott framed it the way most Americans would understand it: “When I was growing up, my mom on Saturdays when my older brother and I wanted to go out and play, she said no. You have to clean the whole house. Every room.” He applied the same standard to Congress. You don’t go on recess until the work is done.
“We shouldn’t be leaving until we get all those things done,” Scott stated. “My mom wouldn’t let me leave. She’d say, no, you gotta stay there, Rick, until you get your job done.”
The Western Hemisphere: Venezuela, Cuba, and the Donroe Doctrine
Scott praised President Trump and Secretary of State Rubio for enforcing what Dean Cain called the “Donroe Doctrine,” the administration’s determination to reassert American influence in the Western Hemisphere.
Scott pointed to concrete progress: the arrest of Nicolás Maduro on drug trafficking charges (an existing indictment, finally enforced), the indictment of Raúl Castro for killing Americans, and additional indictments across the region.
Venezuela: Free Elections Will Happen
On Venezuela, Scott expressed confidence that free elections will happen. He outlined the steps required: release of all political prisoners, an end to oppression, a set election date, a rebuilt election system, and international observers. He noted that opposition leader María Corina Machado would likely be part of the process and, based on current conditions, the likely winner.
“I’m very vocal about it. The president’s committed to it,” Scott stated. “I don’t think we’re that far away from the date.”
Cuba: The Next Domino
On Cuba, Scott predicted that the arrest of Castro family members and Díaz-Canel would trigger peaceful popular uprising, ultimately leading to free elections without U.S. military intervention. He painted a vivid picture of what that day would mean: “Everybody in Versailles having their Cortadito and celebrating.” The restaurant Versailles in Miami, he explained, is basically the capital of Cuba in exile.
Scott connected socialism directly to the situation: “The way socialism works, other than those in power, everybody lives in poverty. That’s the way it works. When Delcy Rodriguez got sworn in as supposedly the president of Venezuela, I think she had a ten-thousand-dollar dress on. So she’s not struggling.
The Save America Act and Election Integrity
Over 80 percent of Americans support requiring voter ID, yet the Save America Act cannot get a Senate vote. Scott was blunt about the reason: “Because Democrats can’t win elections without fraud.”
He stressed that voters across party lines support the measure. “The Democrats back home want it, the Republicans back home want it, independents back home want it. It’s only the elected Democrats that don't want it.”
Three Paths to Passage
Scott laid out three specific paths: eliminate the filibuster entirely, force a talking filibuster with a set time limit and then a vote, or use reconciliation to create economic incentives for states to adopt voter ID and clean their voter rolls.
His call to action for citizens was direct and prioritized: “It’s nice if you send a text or an email. It’s even better if you make a phone call, and even better if you show up in person.” He urged voters to tie their next vote to congressional action on the bill.
Chinese Interference in American Elections
The conversation also addressed President Trump’s national address revealing Chinese interference involving the personal data of at least 220 million Americans and evidence of illegal voters on state rolls. Scott confirmed over 6,000 illegal voters were identified on New Jersey rolls alone.
Birthright Citizenship and the One Nation, One Visa Bill
Senator Scott introduced his bill targeting what he described as an obvious loophole: the ability to send an embryo to the United States for surrogacy, never set foot in the country, and produce an American citizen who can later sponsor family immigration.
“This could be the worst people in the Communist Party of China. It could be Putin’s family, could be anybody,” Scott stated. “I mean, how dumb are we if we don’t fix this?”
He also called for term limits, arguing career politicians end up working for special interests rather than constituents.
National Priorities: Budget, China, and the Pharmaceutical Threat
Scott closed with a summary of immediate priorities: secure elections, fund the government, balance the budget to control inflation (citing two-trillion-dollar deficits), and confront China’s multifaceted threat.
He highlighted a new bill requiring country-of-origin labeling on pharmaceuticals. The numbers are stark: 80 percent of generic drugs are manufactured in China and India. Nearly 90 percent of ingredients originate in China. A University of Indiana study found over 60 percent increased risk of death or hospitalization from Chinese- or Indian-manufactured drugs.
He concluded with a call to strengthen the military and praised the young Americans entering military academies as a sign of national renewal.
Tricia McLaughlin: The Northern Border Threat No One Is Talking About
Former DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin brought firsthand operational knowledge to the second half of the episode. She confirmed that under the Trump administration, border crossings dropped to nearly zero without any new legislation. “We simply enforced the laws that were duly passed by Congress,” she stated.
The Numbers That Should Alarm Every American
McLaughlin revealed that 400 known or suspected terrorists attempted to cross the northern border last year alone. She paired that with the statistic that ICE arrested 10,000 known or suspected terrorists already inside the United States in the same period.
She also noted that one in three children who crossed the southern border under Biden-era policies was at risk for sexual assault or exploitation, and that over 300,000 migrant children went missing under the Biden administration. “That humanitarian toll, the media doesn’t want to talk about it,” she stated. “Instead, they will tell you how you’re a racist for wanting to enforce the rule of law.”
Indigenous Border Zones and Organized Crime
McLaughlin described zones along the Canadian border designated as indigenous lands that Canadian Border Patrol refuses to patrol. “They completely allow these areas to be exploited in the name of indigenous laws,” she explained. These zones have become corridors for organized crime, drug smuggling, illicit cigarettes, and human trafficking, a vulnerability largely unknown to the American public.
USMCA Renegotiation: Holding Allies Accountable
The United States is currently renegotiating the USMCA trade agreement. McLaughlin explained that Canada has been placed under additional tariffs on items including hockey sticks and alcohol because the administration determined Canada was not being a responsible neighbor.
She advocated for new terms requiring Canada and Mexico to actively patrol their borders and imposing sanctions for failure to interdict illicit cross-border activity. “President Trump understands more than any president in my lifetime the power of the U.S. economy and our ability to leverage that to advance American national security,” she stated.
An Interagency Task Force for the Northern Border
McLaughlin called for a dedicated interagency task force involving the State Department, National Security Council, Treasury Department, and DHS to dismantle smuggling pipelines on the northern border. She noted the Trump administration has already done a “phenomenal job” of getting northern border officers the specialized equipment they need, rather than simply redeploying southern border gear.
ICE Recruitment and the Enforcement Results
McLaughlin disclosed that a DHS initiative to hire 10,000 new ICE officers generated approximately 50,000 applications, crediting Dean Cain’s participation in part. She connected the enforcement results to the national murder rate dropping to its lowest level since 1925 and nearly three million illegal aliens being removed or self-deporting under the current administration.
Border Security Was Once Bipartisan
The episode concluded with McLaughlin emphasizing that border security was once a bipartisan issue, pointing out that Barack Obama was called “deporter-in-chief” and CNN used to do ride-alongs with ICE cheering on enforcement. The personal attacks labeling enforcement supporters as racist, she argued, are a sign that opponents have lost on policy.
“When you are losing on the policy side, all you have to resort to is these personal attacks,” McLaughlin stated.
