Wonderful things will happen. —* Dr. Simone Gold, Founder and President, America’s Frontline Doctors When [Dr. Simone Gold](https://americasfrontlinedoctors.org/?ref=media.proudamericanstudios.com) prescribed hydroxychloroquine to a COVID-positive patient in the spring of 2020, she did not expect it to end her career as an emergency physician. The patient recovered within days. The hospital threatened to fire her. That moment, Gold told hosts [Nick Searcy](https://proudamericanstudios.com/team/nick%5Fsearcy?ref=media.proudamericanstudios.com) and [Dr. Darcy Leutzinger](https://proudamericanstudios.com/team/darcyleutzinger?ref=media.proudamericanstudios.com) on Episode 12 of *The Hero Next Door*, was one of several that propelled her from practicing medicine in the emergency room to leading one of the most visible medical freedom movements in the country. Gold, who earned her medical degree by age 23, making her the youngest doctor in America at the time of her graduation, went on to earn a law degree from Stanford before returning to full-time emergency medicine. For more than 25 years, she practiced in hospitals across California, including facilities serving underserved communities near Los Angeles. She described herself as politically middle-of-the-road for most of her career, someone who voted across party lines and stayed focused on her patients. That changed in 2008, when the push for centralized healthcare under the Affordable Care Act raised alarms she could not ignore. As the daughter of a Holocaust survivor from Eastern Europe, Gold said she was acutely sensitive to the speed at which a nation could surrender its freedoms. “If you can control people’s access to healthcare, you can kind of control the population,” Gold said, “because people are so afraid when it comes to medical matters.” ## **A Profession That Stopped Thinking** When COVID arrived in early 2020, Gold watched her physician colleagues abandon independent medical judgment almost overnight. She recalled discussing hydroxychloroquine with peers in February and March, receiving neutral-to-positive responses about the well-known drug with decades of safety data. Then, after the drug became politically charged, those same colleagues reversed their positions within days. > “I wasn’t getting back a valid medical scientific answer,” Gold said. “It was a press conference or a news conference or something they heard, and they changed what they said.” What disturbed Gold most was not a disagreement over the drug’s efficacy, which she acknowledged was debatable in early 2020, but the claim that hydroxychloroquine was unsafe. The drug had been used for 65 to 75 years to treat conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, with a well-documented safety profile she described as superior to that of Tylenol. Gold identified faith as the strongest common denominator among those who questioned the official narrative. “There was something about believing in God that either caused people to be less afraid, and when they were less afraid and their limbic systems not being hijacked by fear, they could think more clearly, or perhaps believing in God makes you have a stronger sense of belief in yourself,” she said. ## **The White Coat Summit and Its Fallout** By the summer of 2020, Gold had assembled roughly a dozen physicians she met through social media. In July 2020, they held the White Coat Summit on the steps of the Supreme Court, a press event with America’s Frontline Doctors that drew 20 million views in eight hours before major technology platforms removed the video. “I didn’t know that it was going to have such an impact,” Gold recalled. The backlash was immediate. Gold was fired from both hospitals where she practiced, rendering her effectively unemployable as an emergency physician. She fought the California Medical Board for three years and spent approximately $150,000 to retain her medical license, ultimately prevailing on appeal. She continues to fight for her law license in New York. Congress investigated her for promoting hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin, the latter of which won the Nobel Prize in Medicine. That battle lasted 18 months. “Does it make sense to you that no matter what you think, me showing up to give a speech, that the rest of my life I should be deprived of being a doctor or being a lawyer?” Gold asked. She held a government-issued permit for a speech. She was subsequently arrested by a team of approximately 20 officers with weapons drawn and laser sights pointed at her in her small condominium. She was placed in isolation. Gold emphasized the 100 percent conviction rate for January 6 defendants who went to trial in Washington, D.C., calling it incompatible with a free society. She said she personally witnessed prosecutors lie, documenting specific instances in her book with citations and links. “The extra-judicial punishment in my case in particular was terribly harsh,” Gold said, noting cases among other defendants involving lost homes, marriages, life savings, and in one case she knew personally, the loss of a child. ## **Gold Care: Medicine Outside the System** Gold channeled her experience into[ Gold Care,](https://goldcare.com/?ref=media.proudamericanstudios.com#top) a telemedicine platform designed to operate outside the corporate medical system. The service runs on a subscription model at $17 per month, giving members access to both medical and naturopathic doctors across the country. Gold described the integration of conventional and naturopathic medicine as one of Gold Care’s core differentiators. During COVID, she noted, basic guidance about controlling blood sugar and maintaining adequate vitamin D levels, which correlated with significantly better outcomes, was largely absent from mainstream medical communication. Gold cited data showing that 80 percent of COVID patients admitted to the ICU had low vitamin D levels. The platform also provides what Gold calls a prescription pack: 11 medications she and her team identified as drugs every household should have on hand, including antibiotics, anti-nausea medication, and corticosteroid eye ointment. A 15-minute appointment with a doctor covers the prescriptions, and the medications are mailed directly to the patient. “I literally want you to have the drugs at home that you should have,” Gold said. “You might get a dog bite, you might get a bad ear infection, you might have a bad laceration. I want you to have these meds at home.” Equally central to Gold Care’s mission is what Gold calls de-prescribing: the process of evaluating patients’ existing medications and removing those that are unnecessary. She cited research showing that as few as two rounds of antibiotics over a lifetime correlate with an increased incidence of inflammatory bowel disease. ## **Built to Withstand Pressure** Gold Care is structured as a Private Membership Association, a legal framework that Gold said insulates the organization from regulatory interference. The platform built its own electronic charting system from the ground up after Gold refused to use commercial systems that require providers to answer what she described as politically motivated intake questions, including questions about firearm ownership that physicians cannot advance past without answering. “I refused to build a company that forced my doctors to answer the gender question,” Gold said. The platform does not share patient data with any outside entity. Gold described the two most significant chokepoints for government control over individuals as schools and hospitals, and said Gold Care’s primary objective is to keep members out of the hospital system whenever medically possible. ## **A Call for Everyday Courage** Gold closed the conversation with a message directed at viewers. “You don’t have to be a doctor and a lawyer and a hero,” she said. “What you have to do is be ten percent more courageous in your daily life.
